Thriller Live is a mixture of an x factor audition,a end of year school performance and a tribute to the late great Michael Jackson. If I was to be absolutely critical the cast were not as into the experience as a lot of those here who probably have seen Michael jackson live.
Those cast to play the role varied and although could vocally capture the essence of MJ they were not as engaging or fully committed as one would hope. They almost came across like they have been given their first shot at a live performance in hopes of being scouted for something better! The backing dancers were out of sync and there was an obvious lack of energy.
The performance as a whole lacked a certain je ne suis qui and lacked the essential time line structure and facts relating to the actual physical changes of Michael jackson. The music library of this showcase started and ended poorly. Its choreography is not as tight and as perfect as one would expect considering who it is that they are trying to emulate. The whole experience has no magic because anyone who grew up with Michael Jackson knew that your jaw was left hanging with every move as Michael pushed the boundaries and he exuded magic. Even live he used his imagination and this was a poor recession version of a performance with his music as a back drop.
This is not a musical with a story line just merely a night out for those wanting to loosely reminisce on the musical memories of a great icon and a great musical contribution of our times. Whilst one can applaud the effort one needs to be realistic that there will ever only be one Michael jackson and should not come to this show any high expectations.
